At Day 1 of Facebook's F8 developer conference today, Mark Zuckerberg discussed its current road map for the next 10 years and everything the company's building to make the world more open and connected.
It’s simply divided into three main sections: improving Facebook proper over the next three years, strengthening Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and other products over the next five years, and developing virtual reality, AI and worldwide connectivity over the next 10 years.
Although, the event continues tomorrow, Facebook like Microsoft emphasized the importance of bots in the coming years, announcing the Messenger Platform API for businesses to deliver automated customer support, e-commerce guidance, content and interactive experience through Messenger chatbots. These bots could even replace 1-800 numbers and call centers.
Interestingly, the company also mentioned plans for augmented reality, when so far its only focused on virtual reality with its Oculus products. The company said future headsets would be the size of a normal pair of glasses and would be able to handle augmented and virtual reality at the same time.
The company also stunned us with its own 360-degree video and VR content with Oculus. Facebook said it created its VR camera from scratch, open sourcing it so people can build their own. It's designed to be portable, durable with aluminium casing and can produce 4k, 6k and even 8k footage.

The company also reinforced its efforts to ‘connect the world,’ including releasing a simulator for its Free Basics program. Zuckerberg also showed off part of the company’s drone airplane, which uses lasers to bring the Web to places with poor connectivity.
However, closing this article with Zuckerberg words; "Over the long run, we're building planes and satellites to connect everyone to the internet; artificial intelligence to help us interact with services more easily; and virtual reality to help us experience the world in a totally new way.
I've always believed that giving more people a voice makes the world a better place, and I'm excited about the future we're all building together."

I am very curious about Oculus. I hope it becomes mainstream one day. Zuckerberg has really created a powerhouse with Facebook. Who would have known it would grow this big?

ReplyDeleteThey just opened a Facebook office here in the Philippines, now I'm curious about Oculus. I just have privacy issues with the social media giant, so I limit the details (no updated info) I put there to protect my private life.

ReplyDeleteHe and his team are really geniuses! I can't imagine what life would be 10 years from now. When I look back 10-15 years ago, what we have now only happens in the movies, but it's now a reality. The future is really getting more interesting.

ReplyDeleteI have a love-hate relationship with FB haha! I admire Zuckerberg for his consistent quest for people all over the world to have access to information, but at the same time, as a social media manager, the constant changes in FB algorithm drives me crazy!
