Get on YouTube and check out CODEGIRL, a true story about the power of young women and technology. The documentary follows what happens when 3,000 teen girls from 28 countries including India, Brazil, Moldova, Nigeria, and the U.S. are taught to code apps, create business plans, and develop market strategies to solve serious problems in their communities such as poverty, fractured communities, domestic violence, disease prevention, unemployment, and drought. The winning team gets $10,000 to develop and release an app.

“CODEGIRL” follows the story of 5,000 girls from 60 countries as they compete in a global entrepreneurship and coding competition by Technovation. The girls have three months to develop an app that attempts to solve a problem in their local community. In the film, they size up their competition, interact with teachers and local mentors, learn to code, and pitch their ideas all in hopes of winning $10,000 in funding and support.
The movie is available on YouTube till November 5 and in theaters November 1. It's great to see initiatives empowering women in the tech world. By 2017, the app market will be valued at $77 Billion, where over 80% of these developers are male. Hopefully, this kind of initiative will address this issue. Indeed, what a man can do a woman can do even better if she’s given the chance to! :)
