“Just like .com before it, .blog is clear and accessible, and it creates millions of fresh, new options for naming your blog. It’s the perfect place to build your home on the web,” WordPress.com said yesterday in an online statement.

According to WordPress.com, the .blog domain extensions will be available for grasp before the end of this year — so if you really want to make a difference this time, now will be the opportunity to start making plans to secure your dream domain. To do that, you can sign up here so that WordPress.com will get you notified once they open it up to the world.

Another good news from the online statement is that the .blog domains will be available to all websites — so you won’t need to have a WordPress or WordPress.com site to purchase one.

Why .Blog?

Speaking on why he believe so much in .blog domain despite the ever presence of other TLDs (Top Level Domain) which among many are not catching up till date, Matt Mullenweg the creator and founder of WordPress.com in a phone interview with Venturebeat gave two reasons why .blog domain will be bomb:

“So, I think .blog is pretty interesting as compared to other TLDs, because a blog is something a lot of people use already. So, while it’d be difficult to imagine, let’s say, Dropbox using a .xyz domain, they already have a blog.Dropbox.com subdomain. So you could imagine they could move that to Dropbox.blog. Or, another company using it. Because companies use blog as a subdirectory and a subdomain, I think that the domain is interesting.”

“The second reason I think we can do a lot better than everyone else is that we obviously run a very large blogging service. We sell a lot of domains. And so, for the many tens of thousands of people who sign up for WordPress.com everyday, we can now offer them a name — a domain on the Internet, which is really the starting point of the independent Web. If you think about it, a domain is one of these things that you can have and no one can take from you. It’s like owning property. And part of my belief in the independent web is I want everyone to have a domain.”

For years, .com was the dominant choice for website names, but it’s become increasingly difficult to find a name. WordPress .blog domain might just be the new era for people having a hard time with personal and simple domain names.

How .Blog Domain Extensions Was Born

WordPress.com parent company, Automattic, today revealed that it quietly acquired the rights to oversee and operate the sale and registration of .blog domains last year for a whooping sum of $19 million.

According to the company, prospective users will be able to purchase a .blog domain at WordPress.com or through their partner domain name registrars. To buttress what was promised before:

“The .blog domain will be available to everyone, regardless of what kind of site you have or who hosts it.”

On what the .blog domain registration price would likely be, the company said “Domain registration prices are still being finalized, but they will be in the standard range for new top-level domains with some premium pricing for higher-value names.”
