It’s glaring many users of social media are very active with trends and update of latest features from their favorite social media apps.
Snapchat; the photo-messaging app with its varieties of filters created a new filter embedded with features looking like a contorted facial expression to give users puffed out cheeks, with distorted eyes and funny toothy grins.
The new filter is a “disgusting” caricature that turns users' faces into Asian caricatures.
However, members of the public took to Twitter to express their opinions referring the filter a “racist” and labeling it "yellowface."

Meanwhile, Snapchat has since removed the "yellowface" and apologized. The company said, "This anime-inspired lens has already expired and won't be put back into circulation. Lenses are meant to be playful and never to offend.”
Snapchat boast of more than 100 million users globally and earlier in the year, the app faced similar allegations of racism for its Bob Marley filter, which added dreadlocks and darkened skin tone.
The term “yellowface” refers to making white people look Asian, which is of particularly in bad taste, considering the recent whitewashing controversies surfacing in recent films.

I have never snapchat before, I don't why people take the chat app so serious, well I just think it's bad if they added such.

ReplyDeleteI've heard of snapchat but never used it because my circle of friends don't use it either. It seems to be more popular among the younger population. Nevertheless, I'm glad people stood up and raised their concerns about that particular filter. It's never good to make fun of other races.
ReplyDeleteI don't have Snapchat and have not used it but have heard that it's super popular these days. I don't really know how Snapchat goes but I do agree that that filter was kind of racist. It's good that Snapchat responded to what people were saying and took action.

ReplyDeleteWhat I have learned lately, you just got to deal by how social media works. The easier you get pissed, then it's your problem. By then on, I manage to ignore most of unnecessary stuff posted on social media.

ReplyDeleteCompanies have slip-ups all the time but it's definitely damaging to their image especially during times like these when people are quick to respond when they are offended. I think social media sites should be more sensitive to their users.
